Mr J McIntyre

PO Box 352
TEWANTIN QLD 4565

Dear Mr McIntyre

Thank you for your letter of 3 July 2002 concerning an education package for Queensland schools. I have been requested to reply to you on the Premier's behalf.

The Premier referred this matter to the Honourable Anna Bligh MP, Minister for Education who has advised that Education Queensland acknowledges that young people need to develop personal attributes and life skills that will prepare them for both employment and further learning. As a part of skilling Queensland students, the Government is focusing on improving workforce and life skills for current and future needs as well as raising general education levels.

You are to be commended for the interest you have shown in the education and development of life skills in today's youth. Under school-based management, however, school principals are responsible for final selection of the learning resources used in Queensland state schools. Education Queensland does not mandate or approve resources.

AccessEd, which is part of Education Queensland, has a review and evaluation service that provides selection advice and guidance to teachers and teacher-librarians about appropriate resources for use in the classroom as enrichment and source material and for inclusion in the library collection. Only material suitable for the Queensland P-1 2 curriculum, which is also owned by AccessEd or accessible on the World Wide Web, is reviewed. It is a requirement that these materials be donated to AccessEd Libraries, however, only items meeting stringent criteria, including suitability for the Queensland curriculum, are reviewed. Further information about the Curriculum Resource Reviews database and the evaluation process can be obtained by contacting Ms Jennifer Cram, Manager, Library Services, AccessEd, on telephone (07) 3421 6523.

Another avenue available, should you wish to bring your educational package to the attention of principals and teachers, would be to place an article in Education Views, Education Queensland's fortnightly newspaper distributed to all state schools in Queensland.

Please feel free to contact Ms Welson, Acting Senior Education Officer, Curriculum Innovation Branch, on telephone (07) 3237 1053 to assist with arrangements regarding this opportunity. Again, thank you for bringing this matter to the Premier's attention and he trusts this information has been of assistance to you.

Yours sincerely

Rob Whiddon
Chief of Staff
